Meet Freesia, a 31-year-old fourth-year medical student at Georgetown University in Washington, DC who sees Community of Hope as a place for positive impact.
Originally from Los Angeles, California, Fressia moved to the DMV area for graduate school. Freesia’s journey with Community of Hope began through the Primary Care Leadership Track program, which pairs students interested in primary care with clinical sites for their rotations. Community of Hope was Freesia’s designated site, and her experiences there inspired her to continue the connection through volunteering. She wanted to explore the side of the organization that the medical field doesn’t normally see and witness firsthand the impact on families’ lives.
“What happens to the patient and their family after they get referred here? Is there anything included with their housing situation? Do they make it out? How do they feel?.”
At Fam-Club, Freesia’s spends her days organizing and playing games and activities with the children residing at the Triumph. She describes each interaction as special and unique, with activities ranging from coloring and playing cards to charades and board games. For Freesia, every experience is different and meaningful. One memorable moment for Freesia was during a fire alarm evacuation test at the Triumph. Seeing the number of families affected by hardships was a poignant reminder of the importance of compassionate care and support. It reinforced Freesia’s belief in the value of humanistic approaches to helping people through their journeys. As a volunteer, Freesia hopes to bring encouragement and positivity to the children and the Community of Hope team. She sees herself as a friendly face, offering support and fostering a sense of community and hope.
Freesia’s dedication and compassion exemplify the spirit of volunteerism at Community of Hope. Her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others, even amidst her busy schedule as a medical student, is truly inspiring. Let’s give a round of applause to Freesia for her invaluable impact on our community!
