Ashley Gamble knew from the moment she drove past her neighborhood health center, the Family Health and Birth Center (FHBC), six years ago that she would deliver her next child there. After two hospital childbirths, she preferred her next birthing experience to be in a more personal and holistic environment, under the care of midwives.
“I want to do a water birth at FHBC. Having autonomy over my birthing experience is really important to me this time around,” said Ashley.
Due this weekend, Ashley is happy that she chose to receive her prenatal care at FHBC, especially as a participant in the National Capital Strong Start Program. The program ensures that low-income mothers and their babies in the District have the best health outcomes possible by providing patient navigators and other services. The FHBC prenatal navigator, Jaleesa Hopkins, directs mothers to local resources and coordinates their care with midwives and a doula – another woman who supports the mother during childbirth. Our Strong Start doulas provide extensive care meetings before the birth, staying during the birth and checking in again afterwards.
When Jaleesa suggested the program to Ashley, she immediately agreed to it.
“As a former patient navigator at a local hospital, I know that there are a lot of programs out here for struggling mothers that women do not know about,” said Ashley.
One of the most impactful aspects of the program for Ashley has been the group care sessions. During these sessions, all of the women who are due within the same month come together to learn about topics such as preparing for your new baby, healthy eating habits, and leading a healthy life while pregnant. “I loved group because I was able to build relationships with other mothers and learn from their experiences as I go through my own pregnancy.” Ashley has also enjoyed the nutrition services that Jaleesa referred her to, which have ensured that she remain healthy throughout her pregnancy.
Ashley has become an advocate for FHBC and has been advertising it to her friends. According to Ashley, “The staff of FHBC creates a warm and familiar space that is very welcoming and free of judgment.” The care received at FHBC is personalized, compassionate and focused on making expectant mothers feel empowered to make the best decisions for their family.
We are wishing Ashley the best as she welcomes her baby in the next few days!
