Empowering Birth: Myla’s Story of Self-Advocacy, Empowerment and HOPE

Myla Watley describes both of her birthing experiences as “the best experiences ever.” In fact, her journey to motherhood was one where she felt cared for and empowered so much, that’s she’s now a fierce advocate for Black maternal health and breastfeeding. Myla Watley discovered Community of Hope during her first pregnancy in 2021.

“I chose a team of midwives during both of my pregnancies because I wanted to experience the highest level of care in all ways – physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” says Myla.

She considers the experience of pregnancy and childbirth to be transformative. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Myla received the care and attention she needed during both her pregnancy and delivery. “The supportive community of midwives made me feel safe and informed,” she shared. “They really listened to my concerns and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way.

However, it wasn’t just the midwives who played a crucial role in Myla’s journey. Her husband was also an essential part of her successful birthing experience. “Having my husband by my side made all the difference,” Myla reflected. “He was my rock, supporting me through every contraction and every decision. Together with the midwives, we were a team.”

The midwives’ focus on personalized, compassionate care was one of the most impactful aspects of Myla’s experience. “The interpersonal connection with the midwives and the community of women there really made a difference,” she explained. “I felt like I was part of a family, not just a patient.” This sense of community was particularly important to Myla, as it helped her navigate the complexities of pregnancy and childbirth with confidence and peace of mind.

This tranquility and confidence in trusting her body was also beneficial in her breastfeeding journey. Today with two children, ages 3 and 1, Myla is still a confident advocate for breastfeeding, sharing the knowledge that she receives from midwives and experience. “Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially in the beginning,” Myla noted. “But the midwives were there with me every step of the way. They provided the guidance I needed to succeed, and I can’t thank them enough for that.” She encourages all new parents to be patient with themselves and to find the kind of care that they need. “It’s so important to have the right people around you during this time,” she emphasized.

Reflecting on her experiences, Myla spoke about the importance of having choices in healthcare and the need to feel safe and supported. “Community of Hope provided a space where I felt secure in my decisions and knew that I had the right support system in place, including my husband,” she said. “This kind of care is vital, not just for me, but for my children’s future.”

As she looks to the future, Myla expresses her hopes for her children, emphasizing the importance of choice, safety, and community. “I want my children to grow up knowing that they have options and that they are supported in whatever choices they make,” she said. She encourages other mothers to explore their options and trust that with the right team, their journey can be as supportive and uplifting as the one she experienced.

Community of Hope’s Family Health and Birth Center is more than just a place for medical care—it’s a sanctuary where compassion, respect, and integrity are at the heart of everything we do. Mothers like Myla, supported by their loving partners, are empowered to make informed choices, finding the encouragement they need to thrive. As we continue to care for families, stories like Myla’s inspire us to honor these values and remain steadfast in our commitment to compassion, respect, and the dignity of every individual.
