Back to School Bash Success

Do you hear the bell ringing? School is back in session for students in Washington, DC!

To get back in school mode, Community of Hope and the William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Library hosted our 4th Annual Bellevue Back to School Bash, saluting the end of summer and getting kids ready for a great school year.

We distributed more than 800 backpacks – stuffed with pencils, paper, notebooks, rulers, and more – to kids in our housing program and our Bellevue and Washington Highlands neighbors.  New school supplies mean a fresh start for the upcoming school year!

These supplies help parents to jumpstart school readiness for their children. We’re grateful for our partners and donors who donated backpacks and made sure they were filled with goodies.

More than 1,100 community neighbors came out to celebrate with us. They jumped and danced along to double-dutch and zumba demonstrations; sang Michael Jackson hits with an MJ impersonator; and enjoyed a performance by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Step Team and local rapper, Hugo Lon. Miss District of Columbia emceed the event.

Back to school time doesn’t only mean school supplies. Kids were also equipped with free haircuts, games, snacks, bicycles, and a variety of health and learning resources for the family. What a great way to ring in the new school year!

Check out pictures from the event!

A big thank you to the many partners who helped Community of Hope and the William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Library successfully get students equipped for a year of learning!
