Community of Hope Re-Opens Doors to a Bigger, Better Marie Reed Health Center
The newly renovated facility will provide same quality health services to more of the City’s most underserved residents
April 17, 2018 – Community of Hope (COH) just re-opened its doors to its newly renovated Marie Reed Health Center. The facility is dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of thousands of the City’s low-income, immigrant and refugee community members.
The newly renovated center will continue to provide a holistic approach to health care, including a wide range of primary medical services, and expanded dental and behavioral health services. Additional patient services focused on care coordination, health education, and insurance access will also be available. The renovations expand the center, which now features nine medical exam rooms; five dental operatories; two behavioral health consult rooms; new spaces for group care; and more light and temperature control.
“This newly renovated facility will allow us to provide the same great medical care we’re known and trusted for, but in a much nicer and larger space,” says Kelly Sweeney McShane, President and CEO of Community of Hope. “As our organization’s longest-operating health center, this site has served as a lifeline for affordable and accessible care in the Adams Morgan community for almost 40 years. We are thrilled to be back home!”
The renovation project began in summer 2016, and involved a complete modernization of the Marie H. Reed Community Learning Center, including the elementary school, daycare, pool, and recreation facility. Funds for the renovation were provided by the DC government, thanks to the support of patients, the Mayor, and City Council. With the help of a generous anonymous donor, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, and many other generous donors, Community of Hope raised funds for furnishings, equipment and startup costs.
Community of Hope’s Marie Reed Health Center served about 6,500 patients prior to renovation, 89% of whom report to have incomes below 200% of the poverty level, and 32% of whom report being best served in a language other than English. Due to the increased space after renovation, there is the capacity to increase visits by up to 40%.
