At Community of Hope, the impact of women is felt in every part of our work—from those who give, to those who lead, to the families we serve every day.
This Women’s History Month, we recognize the women whose work and generosity make Community of Hope’s mission possible.
“My personal and professional world was falling apart,” shared longtime supporter Claudia Coonrod Barnett. Then she “met women who had come through personal trauma without the support I had received. Those women inspired me to create safety, support, and love to the best of my financial ability.”
Her words reflect a shared commitment among women who give, not just to support a mission, but to stand alongside other women and families working toward stability and health.
We see that same commitment in Rose Alford, a Sustainer of Hope, who shared: “When [COH] built the building in my neighborhood, I could see where the money is going. Right here in my community. It makes me feel good that I am giving back.”
Together, women like Claudia and Rose are part of a broader community of donors whose generosity strengthens access to care, housing, and support for thousands of families across Washington, DC.
That impact is reflected within Community of Hope as well. Women are deeply integrated into the leadership and direction of our organization:
- 42 of our 51 leaders are women, serving across programs, clinics, operations, and executive teams.
- 15 of 16 Community Advisory Council members are women, ensuring our services reflect the needs of DC families.
- 12 of our 14 board members are women, guiding our mission at the highest level.

This leadership is essential to our mission. Women guide decisions, strengthen services, and help build a system of care that reflects the communities we serve including:
- 600 prenatal patients each year
- About 1,350 women-led households in our housing programs
- Nearly 10,000 female patients annually
Earlier this month, we joined others in recognizing this impact through #GiveToGain, a moment to reflect on how women support one another and the collective difference that creates.
We are grateful for the women who give, the women who lead, and the women who trust us with their care. Together, they shape stronger, healthier communities across DC.
