325 DC Families Celebrate the Holidays
Washington, DC– December 22, 2014 – Because of the support of two generous lead partners – Walmart and Gallup – Community of Hope will provide $50 gift cards in our Adopt-A-Family program to 325 families who have experienced homelessness in the past year.
The Adopt-A-Family program makes the holidays a little brighter for families who are now housed and receiving services with Community of Hope. Over 80% of those families currently live in DC’s Ward 7 and 8. The gift of gift cards allows the families to make their own decisions about what their family needs most during the holiday season.
Kelly Sweeney McShane, President and CEO of Community of Hope, shared “We are so grateful for the leadership of Walmart and Gallup, as well as many other workplaces and individuals. Their support will allow parents to pick just the right present for their children, bringing joy this holiday season.”
“Walmart is pleased to support Community of Hope and families across the city during this holiday season,” said Nina Albert, Director of Community Affairs for Walmart. “Our associates are excited to participate in Community of Hope’s holiday celebration and to help brighten this holiday season for their residents.”
Last week, Walmart associates and executives were on-site at Community of Hope’s Girard Apartments to deliver gift cards in person to the families who currently call Girard their temporary home.
As the gift cards, cookies, and candy canes were passed out, eight-year-old, Diamond Simms serenaded the volunteers with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. Her mother, Tocorra Simms, whispered to the volunteers “I can’t wait to use this gift card to buy my daughter a karaoke machine. She is constantly singing.”
