Volunteering with Community of Hope

Volunteer on your own or engage your workplace, family, or community to volunteer with us and inspire hope!

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer with families or individuals overcoming homelessness at one of our housing sites by playing games, doing crafts, sharing a skill, hosting a lunch, or more. Organize a collection drive of critical items or host a holiday party to spread cheer!

We welcome volunteers 14+ at Fam-Club.

Find a volunteer opportunity that interests you by viewing our current opportunities here. Simply create your Community of Hope volunteer profile and sign up for opportunities on Volunteer Hub!

For certain positions, individual applications will be reviewed and potential volunteers will be contacted for an interview.

Visit our calendar of events and then view availability for an event by clicking the event title. When you want to register for an event, click the sign-up button, and either login or create an account when prompted. Once you are logged in, you can return to the calendar and sign up for any other events you’d like without having to log in again.

You’ll know you have successfully been signed up for an event when you receive a confirmation email.

You are an important part of the team! In order to ensure that we have enough volunteers for each shift, we count on you to keep your commitment. If you are unable to attend, we ask that you cancel via VolunteerHub, email, or phone as soon as you know of a change in your plans. If you miss two or more shifts without contacting Community of Hope staff, your VolunteerHub account will be locked (you will not be able to log in), until you have a further conversation with Community of Hope staff. We appreciate your understanding.

This January, we’re celebrating a major milestone at Community of Hope: 25 years of Kelly Sweeney McShane’s leadership as President and CEO.

What began as a celebratory trip quickly became a fight for survival. Ebony planned a weeklong vacation that turned into her being stranded for two months when Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas during her stay in 2019. “I was planning to celebrate a major milestone, but had no clue that a storm was coming,” says Ebony. Once the storm hit, planes were grounded and her savings for the trip quickly dwindled, leaving her stranded physically and financially.

When the world shut down during COVID, she found herself facing storms she never saw coming. A devoted wife of 30 years, mother of five, and “Yaya” to three grandchildren, she had always been the one holding everyone together. But when her own health and peace of mind began to unravel, she realized it was finally time to take care of herself.

Three years ago, Community of Hope opened our first in-house pharmacy — making it easier for patients to get the medications they need without additional barriers. Since then, the pharmacy has become a trusted part of care, offering convenience, savings, and a team that treats every patient with individualized support.

This month Community of Hope recognized our 45 year anniversary! Forty-five years ago, on September 12, 1980, Community of Hope was signed into existence. What began with a single housing site and a small health clinic at 1417 Belmont Street in Columbia Heights has grown into a support system for thousands of families across Washington, DC.
