Nourishing Hope from the Start

Victorya Neal, a first-time mom, credits WIC (Women, Infants, and Children Nutritional Program) and Community of Hope for filling in the gaps when she needed support the most.

For almost a decade, Victorya Neal has trusted Community of Hope with her medical care. When she learned she was pregnant, Victorya connected with Community of Hope but was worried about navigating motherhood mostly on her own.

Facing hyperemesis, a severe form of morning sickness and resulting reduced hours at work Victorya began her pregnancy journey with limited support. She relied on the Community of Hope services including Rides for Moms transportation, so she never missed a prenatal appointment. She found support and guidance through the Centering Pregnancy® group. Here, she learned invaluable lessons in nutrition, breastfeeding, pregnancy, and discovered essential self-care techniques that could be incorporated into her busy life as a mother. Throughout it all, Victorya credits her perinatal care coordinator who guided her through some of her “darkest moments” along with her immediate family and church family—who together created her “village.”

“It’s very helpful to find people who understand your needs and that you may be struggling mentally as well,” says Victorya. “Just know that you are not alone and that you can rely on these resources from Community of Hope to avoid feeling overwhelmed or stressed.”

Today, her daughter, Leighton, is a bubbly 16-month-old. Recently, Leighton had her first dental appointment at Community of Hope, marked by laughter, abundant baby claps, and an A-B-C singalong with Leighton leading.

Currently, WIC plays a crucial role in Victorya’s life by providing fresh produce and whole milk for her daughter. “WIC has really been helpful in filling in the gaps. I love having WIC for that extra boost of support that we truly needed.” She enjoys receiving farmers market vouchers and gets Leighton to try lots of fruit and vegetables which she likes and keeps her healthy.

For Victorya, benefits of the WIC program go beyond the free, healthy food but add to the overall feeling of care from Community of Hope. “My baby is healthy and I owe that to Community of Hope,” says Victorya.

As she continues to learn her motherhood role, she not only witnesses her baby’s growth but also pushes herself. She is now creating art full of strength and community, portraying her own resilience and the support she received. Reflecting on her journey, Victorya emphasizes, “All your needs will be met with all the knowledge that everyone at Community of Hope has…It is important to have a provider who shows empathy and consideration for your needs.”
