Youth mentoring is an engaging way to build lasting and impactful connections. Tiffany Stecker, who has been a Community of Hope mentor for the last two years, has directly experienced the joys of this.
Tiffany learned about Community of Hope volunteer opportunities on a Yelp discussion board. Not too long after, she was matched with then 12-year old, Dasha. “I wanted to contribute somewhere where I could build a personal relationship with someone. I had participated in several volunteer events… but I felt that I hadn’t built a connection with an individual.”
When Tiffany and Dasha initially began their mentor/mentee relationship, they were surprised by how easily they could relate to one another. Although they come from different backgrounds, they share many of the same interests and ideas. Tiffany, a California native, arrived to the District only three years ago, and Dasha, a Ward 8 resident, often did not have time and resources to explore the city. During their weekend outings, both have enjoyed discovering all that DC’s diverse cultural activities have to offer: museums, historical sites, film festivals, bike rides, and sporting events.
One of Dasha’s favorite experiences was when Tiffany took her to see a ballet performance at the National Gallery of Art. “We were both blown away by the skill and beauty of the dancers. Now every time we pass the building, she mentions it.” Tiffany commented.
Over the years, both have enjoyed seeing the other change and develop as a result of their relationship. Tiffany has noticed how Dasha, now 14, has matured considerably since they began their mentoring relationship. “She is…more open to talk about personal things…our conversations are more mature as well: boys, friends, and planning for the future.” Dasha considers Tiffany to be a great friend who is “really fun and easy to talk to” and she appreciates the activities and new experiences Tiffany has exposed her to.
Through sharing their time and a portion of their lives together, Tiffany and Dasha have found ways to enrich each other’s lives. Tiffany says, “The most rewarding part has been…seeing how the work and time has made a difference and is making a positive impact on both of our lives.” Thank you both for sharing your story!
