At the launch of a new school year, Katrina Sanders is living in Community of Hope’s family shelter while preparing her children for their school year with resilience and hope.
Before arriving at Community of Hope, Katrina and her children lived in a three-bedroom apartment. However, the pandemic disrupted their lives, leading to job loss and increased challenges. “Everything was fine until the pandemic changed everything. I lost my job, and things started to spiral,” she reflected. On top of that, she was dealing with a domestic violence situation which brought urgency to the need for change. Seeking safety, the family turned to Community of Hope, where they found not just housing but also a supportive and caring community.
The support from Community of Hope has been a significant part of Katrina’s journey. The kids received backpacks and school supplies during the Bellevue Back to School Bash, which Katrina said was a “blessing.” “We were out there in the rain, but it was worth it. The kids got everything they needed, and it was such a relief,” she said with a smile.
Despite the challenges, including the day-to-day logistics of getting three children ready for school, Katrina remains optimistic and resilient. “Everything is a challenge, but God has given me the grace and patience to handle it,” she reflected. “I’m just thankful we have a safe place to call home, even if it’s temporary.”
Katrina’s teenage son, who is entering the 11th grade, is especially eager to start the new school year. Active in his school’s band and looking forward to what lies ahead, he’s already thinking about his future beyond high school. “He’s focused on getting out and moving forward,” Katrina said.
Looking ahead, Katrina sees a bright future for her family. “A year from now, I see us in a five-bedroom house with a backyard,” she shared dreamily. “We’ll have a garden where we grow our own vegetables, and my son, who’s taking an agricultural class, will help us cultivate it.”
Community of Hope has played a crucial role in providing the stability and support needed during this challenging time. “I’m so thankful for the roof over our heads and the positive staff who have been kind to us. It’s a safe place, and that means everything to me and my kids.”
Her message to other families in similar situations is one of resilience and faith. “Everything is a test, and if you stay positive and keep moving forward, you will come out on the other side.” As new school year begins, this family is a testament to the strength and determination that lies within us all, especially when supported by a caring community.
