CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS

Community of Hope provides many activities and opportunities for children to grow, find joy in learning and develop healthy relationships. This is done through the hard work and dedication of both staff and volunteers. Below is just some of what we can offer to the children and teens we serve:

Mentors

Children living in Community of Hope housing who are between the ages of 9 and 17 can be matched with a volunteer Mentor. The mentor, a responsible, compassionate adult, spends quality time with the the child. For many of the kids, it may be their first opportunity to develop a long-lasting bond with a trusted adult, and experience a healthy relationship. Mentors make a ten to twelve month commitment.

Tutors and Homework Helpers

Homelessness and the resulting instability almost always takes a toll on a child’s education. Community of Hope tackles this problem head-on by providing the children we serve tutors and homework helpers. Tutors are volunteers who work one-on-one with a child to help them in specific subjects and on homework assignments, including school projects and book reports. Homework Helpers provide general assistance to help kids complete their assigned homework. During the school year, roughly six to twelve kids are helped daily.

Computer Lab

Access to technology is key to academic success. To give the kids at Community of Hope a leg up and put them on equal footing with their classmates, we provide a computer lab with up-to-date computers and software. Volunteers help residents and children develop basic computer skills, including word processing.

Child Care

While adult residents are taking part in various life skills classes and training opportunities, volunteers provide child care for children of various ages. Volunteers are screened, trained and supervised to provide a positive experience for the children. This time is important to allow the parents the necessary time to focus on learning up the skills they need to become stable without distraction.
