Community of Hope Hosts Mini-Walk To Raise Homelessness Awareness and Funds

Washington, DC – Community of Hope will be hostinga mini-walk with the AppleTree Institute’s Columbia Heights Campus on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 10:00 AM – 12:15 PM. More than 160 students are expected to participate. Students will participate in a 30 minute homelessness education activity, followed by a 15 minute walk to spread the word in the community.

Nearly 12,000 people in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region are without homes. More than 40 percent are families. One in four is a child. Community of Hope, a local nonprofit that provides healthcare and housing to DC’s homeless and underserved residents, is one of the beneficiaries of Fannie Mae’s Help the Homeless Program. This program, which culminates with a November 19th Walkathon on the National Mall, raises funds to support organizations working to prevent and end homelessness in the Washington metropolitan area. Since 1988, the Help the Homeless Program has raised more than $85 million, impacting thousands of families and children in the DC community.

Mini‐Walks serve as community-based alternatives to the Walkathon on the National Mall and are a great way to increase the awareness about the issue of homelessness while raising critical funds. More than 700 mini‐walks are expected to occur from July to November in communities across our region.

Individuals can make a difference in the lives of those who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless by walking on November 19, making a donation, or volunteering their time. Last year, the beneficiaries of the Help the Homeless Program supported more than 400,000 clients. For more information about the Help the Homeless Program, visit www.helpthehomelessdc.org. Be sure to designate Community of Hope (DC026) as your beneficiary organization of choice.
