Development & Communications Intern
About Community of Hope: Community of Hope (COH) is a leader in addressing the healthcare and housing needs of Washington, DC’s most economically vulnerable residents. Community of Hope’s mission is to improve the health and quality of life of low-income, homeless, and underserved families and individuals in the District of Columbia by providing healthcare, housing with supportive services, educational opportunities, and spiritual support.
About the Internship: This is an unpaid position. The intern is expected to commit 15–20 hours a week. Start date is flexible. The internship will last approximately 4 months. The schedule and duration is flexible.
This is an ideal position for someone who would like to learn all facets of the nonprofit world while promoting accessible and affordable housing and healthcare. Intern will work in COH’s administrative headquarters, located in Dupont Circle, two blocks from the metro.
Responsibilities include researching funding sources (foundations, corporations, government, and major individuals); database management and archiving; and assisting with external communications (including website, social networks, e-alerts, and publications).
The Ideal Candidate Has:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Working knowledge of spreadsheets, Microsoft Office suite, and using a database.
• An interest in fundraising and communications.
• Flexibility and the ability to deal with many tasks and prioritize.
• Be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Able to take both direction and initiative.
• Maintain the face of the organization in a professional way.
• Graphic design experience preferred but not required.
As an Intern You Will:
• Become familiar with the inner workings of non-profit organizations
• Gain an in-depth understanding of Community of Hope’s mission and campaigns
• Research and evaluate prospective donors, foundations, and reporters
• Edit proposals, grants, and related documents
• Brainstorm and draft social media updates for Community of Hope’s Facebook and Twitter accounts
• Gather stories and draft articles for the website and publications
• Monitor the news and blogosphere for healthcare and housing stories
• Assist development team with administrative tasks
